Seven Secrets of Spontaneous Storytelling Workshop
A storytelling workshop for teachers & anyone else who wants to become a more confident storyteller.

It was the best workshop I've ever been to.

Super awesome, contagious enthusiasm.

Best way to learn, thanks for the incredible tools.

She was great! She was awesome!

Interactive, creative, animated. Very valuable tricks to make learning and relationships with students more meaningful.

Great lessons in storytelling, relationships and in life. Thank you!

Comments from participants in Laura's Seven Secrets of Spontaneous Storytelling workshop

Before there were books there were stories, stories told without books, TV or computers, stories specific to one’s language, culture and values. Awaken your inner storyteller as we share seven secrets from the timeless art of storytelling. By the end of this confidence-building and interactive workshop, participants will be better equipped to tell stories in any setting. From childcare providers to teachers to children's ministry staff, Laura has taken more than 800 teachers, support staff and childcare workers on this storytelling adventure.

Laura is a gifted teacher. Following the "Hero's Journey" on my own path as a writer was fun and will help me hold my focus during the challenging moments. It will help me see myself as a hero on an important quest. I will recommend this workshop to new and experienced writers.

Laura's organizational skills are so evident. She provided a safe environment which was much appreciated.

Laura's enthusiasm is contagious.

I loved the quick pace. No pauses. I loved the mix of different activities: written, spoken, painting, etc.

Thanks, Laura, for presenting the material in such a fun way!

As the weekend unfolded, the exercises she presented chipped away at some of my protective outer layers revealing deeper more meaty aspects of myself that dared to percolate onto paper.

Participants in Soul Surfing Weekend Course

Course Description: What is the master narrative of your life? What kind of hero are you and what are you questing for? These are just some of the questions that we will consider as we "surf" the stories that shape our present personal realities. Drawing from mythic story structure, narrative psychology and her experience as a storyteller, Laura will coach the group through a structured blend of autobiographical writing, mixed media creativity exercises, guided visualization, oral and non-verbal storytelling exercises, and group discussions. By the end of the weekend, participants will have a substantial collection of autobiographical writing to take home as well as a fresh sense of themselves as active storytellers.

Writing Your Way In: A Scriptwriting Workshop for Teachers

Wow! Great ideas, practical ones to take into class on Monday! It's important we be prepared to do what we ask the kids to do.

Fun, informative and inspiring. Wonderful content and program ideas.

Awesome workshop! I am leaving with many skills and ideas to use in my class and in my own writing.

Enthusiastic, knowledgeable. Lots of great activities for motivating kids to write and be creative.

Workshop Participants at BC Alternate Education Conference 2010

Why script writing? Because it is probably the least formal and most relatable style of fiction writing for kids today. And because script writing is all about relationships, in other words conflict. Whether you consider yourself a writer or not, you will come away from this workshop with some fun and educational writing exercises that you can use in the classroom as well as some creative ways to get your students interacting and connecting with yourself and each other. Be prepared to do some writing alone and in small groups, and to do a little performing.

The Writing Process & Getting Published for Teachers (and their students)
Join author and storyteller Laura Thomas for an interactive session that provides teachers with an insider's view of just what it takes to sell a piece of writing to a paying market. During the workshop, Laura uses examples from her own career to review the writing process (from idea to final edit) and demonstrate how aspiring writers of all ages can break in to the publishing industry. The focus will be on equipping teachers to share this valuable information with their students. Both fiction and non-fiction markets will be discussed, as will the self-publishing industry.
