My School My Story:
Writer & Storyteller in Residence Project
Does your school have a story?
Do your students and teachers know the history of your school?
Are you looking for a language arts project that builds community and celebrates the unique social footprint of
your school?
Are you interested in immersing your students in the tradition of oral storytelling?
Laura's My School My Story project will help you meet each of these
objectives.

About the Project
The project is spread out over five months, usually January to May, and consists of the following five
steps:
- Researching your school's history and geography.
- Selecting the top three virtues that your students and staff stand for.
- Writing an original short story for your school (typcially an origin myth or a legend) of
approximately 2,000 words.
- Taking the story to the oral form and coaching students to tell the story through a practical storytelling
workshop that will improve students' presentation skills.
- Optional - assistance with translation of the story to a second or third language.
- Presenting and celebrating the story at a special assembly where prominent members of the school district
and the broader community are asked to come and hear the story.
Laura serves as project manager throughout the process, providing lesson plans, on-site workshops and an overall
plan. She visits the school for at least one full day per month. She will also meet with teachers through Web
conferencing as necessary.
Some schools may want to explore publication. Laura is available to consult through this process.
When Laura is on site she can provide lunch-hour writing and/or storytelling workshops for interested
students.
