Sleeping Ugly

One day, in a kingdom not so far away, there lived a really ugly prince. He was so horribly ugly; he couldn't get a princess to go on a date with him. His name was Reggie the 25th. All his life his mom, the Queen, had beautiful princesses come from far and wide so Reggie could choose one to be his date. He liked them all, but none had liked him because he was so horribly ugly.

"I cannot be seen with such an ugly prince!" was one princess’s reaction when she met Reggie. Others reacted much differently. Eight princesses threw up, nine ran away screaming, five fainted, three thought he was a dragon that was supposed to be protecting the prince, but instead had eaten the prince, and four nicely said he wasn't their type and hurriedly ran away. Reggie was tired of princesses turning him down because he was so horribly ugly.

After the butler had cleaned up what one princess left behind, the Queen went upstairs to tell Reggie her latest plan for finding him a wife. "You are going to fall asleep for 100 years, locked in a castle the entire time, waiting for your princess to save you!" said the Queen.

"WHAT?!" yelled Reggie.

"Relax. That is just the basic idea. You'll pretend you've been cursed to sleep for 100 years and if someone doesn't kiss you to wake you up before the 100 years is over, you'll die!" said his mother.

"Why," Reggie said, "Would I do that? What is the point of that? What if I have to wait 100 years and die for real because I waited so long?"

"That won't happen!" the Queen said excitedly, "There will be a new princess everyday! One that has never met you! Eventually one of them will like you!" Reggie said he'd try it.

So the next day Reggie and his mom went to the highest room, in the tallest tower. "This is where you'll sleep. The bathroom is over there, and the chef will bring you food when you ring that bell over there. A princess will come at 11:00 am every day, so make sure you pretend to be asleep until she either kisses you or leaves the room. She'll knock on the door five times before she enters. I'll come to visit every second day. A butler will stand outside your door if you need anything else. Just call him in and he will get it for you. Sound good?" explained Reggie's mother.

"Yes yes! I get it mother!! When is the first princess coming?" Reggie said.

"In 10 minutes. You better get ready!" replied his mom.

10 minutes later, the first princess knocked 5 times and opened the door. "Finally," Reggie thought, "The princess is here. I hope she likes me!" She didn't. She walked in, went over to the bed, and walked right out. The next 700 princesses did the same, some with the additional scream, throw up, or faint. "I don't understand! Why can't a princess see past the way I look and go out with me?" Reggie said, "Who’s coming next?"

"About that," his mother said, "There is only one princess left in the country. Princess Olive."

"You mean the really ugly one?" Reggie asked.

"Well well well, look who’s talking now. Listen to your own advice. Don’t judge a book by its cover. Who cares if she’s ugly! At least I got you a princess," the Queen replied.

"I guess you’re right. Well maybe she'll like me," Reggie said hopefully.

At 11:00 am the next day, Princess Olive knocked on Reggie's door 5 times. She walked inside, went over to the bed, took one look at look at him, and... she…… KISSED HIM!!! Reggie pretended to wake up. "You kissed me!" he said astonished, “You really kissed me! You didn't throw up, or scream, or faint, or run away!! Why?"

"My father said that if I didn't find a prince to marry me within the next two years, then I would have to be alone for the rest of my life and the throne would go to my younger brother. I also chose you because I like you. You are just as ugly as I am. I knew you wouldn't care about what I looked like. You would just be happy I woke you up." Olive said.

"You're right. I won't judge you, as long as you don't judge me. And you know that since you kissed me, you have to go on a date with me, right?" Reggie said.

"Of course I know! It was on the posters your mom put up around the country." exclaimed Olive.

"What?" Reggie said, "She put up posters? That is SO embarrassing!!" Olive laughed.

The next day Reggie and Olive announced that they were dating. The kingdom celebrated for weeks. Reggie and Olive had a great time partying with their subjects. Both Reggie’s and Olive’s parents were very happy for them. Everyone thought that Reggie and Olive were perfect for each other.

“I’m so glad none of the other princess’s liked me.” Reggie said to Olive one day.

“Me too.” She replied.

“There’s no one I’d rather spend the rest of my life with then you.” Reggie said. Then he knelt down and pulled out a ring. “Olive, will you marry me?” he asked.

“Of course I will Reggie! I love you!” Olive exclaimed.

“I love you too Olive!”

When the kingdom heard about the wedding the cheers could be heard for miles. Everyone was so happy that Reggie was finally getting married.
A week later Prince Reggie and Princess Olive got married. Their two kingdoms, Daisillia and Aglantia were joined to become Daislantia. The royal couple had 5 children, each prettier than their parents. And they all lived happily ever!

Thank you so much for picking my story! I am so excited! Ever since I’ve gotten good reviews on this story (which I originally wrote in grade 6) I have wanted to be an author. Winning fourth place in this contest has boosted my confidence in pursuing a career in writing! Thank you!
